I’ve been thinking. The series is called ‘Skulduggery Pleasant’ and not ‘Valkyrie Cain’ or anything.
My theory is that it’s named after him because he’ll be the last man standing in Book Nine, a dead man in a field of corpses. Because he’s a killer, a genius.
It’s him writing it all down. It’s him telling Valkyrie’s story when the others are all gone. It’s him who buried them, it’s him who walked away.
Because in the end, there is only one survivor.
Or I could be missing something else completely.
okay but seriously part of the reason i want crossdressing val and skul is because i
a) want val to explore her gender and gender presentation because i kinda identify with her so that would make me happy and
b) i think that skul would want to support her in this so he would change outfits just to see what it would be like so she feels less self-conscious about it (she doesn’t really but it’s still nice to have the support)
(also i’m pretty sure that skulduggery’s fondness for nice clothes extends to women’s clothes too so there’s that)
basically i want more characters that have different gender presentation and expression because it would kind of make me feel better about myself as well as be really fun to read
British-Chinese Tanith though.
Tanith going into that place knowing that she’s never found anywhere she fits yet and not expecting it to be any different this time. Tanith letting the name Highborn settle over her like a mantle, because there’s power in being different - her parents had time to teach her that much. Tanith loving how the crispness in her voice contrasts with the Londoner’s slur.
Tanith leaving that place and deciding to dye her hair gold because she might come from the shadows but it’s the sunlight she loves. Tanith being in love with the feel of brown leather moving with her skin because it makes her think of the armor of her ancestors and feeling more protected than she has ever been in the present moment alone. Tanith gripping her sword and knowing she is a warrior woman risen from generations.
Tanith never quite understanding the way both of the cultures she is born from are obsessed with tea, but nodding and smiling and drinking it anyway. Tanith making her body into her own possession because it’s so easy in the flashing bright lights of the modern world to become an object of someone else, something else. Tanith loving her magic because she has seen so much with it and will see so much more.

about halfway through the series val gets sick and tired of her stupid hair getting in the way and falling out of its ponytails when she’s fighting so she cuts it the hell off and rocks it short

dexter and solomon should be the new elders with china and it'd basically be like one of those really dysfunctional offices like dexter would wear his robes and try and do the right thing but solomon and china are just like nah son and they go and fuck everything up while looking fab in suits and great clothing and dexter just wants to do his job man

- fletcher is trans and part of why he stops rolling his eyes at mage society is definitely that even if it’s alternatingly lame and dangerous, no one is ever gonna give him shit about names or misgender him
- in general mage society does not give a care about orientation or gendery things. it is an underground culture where literally everyone goes by a name other than the dumb one their idiot parents slapped on their baby ass no one is gonna make a fuss about names or pronouns or presentation

- skul and ghastly DEFINITELY made out at least one time in their relative youths. it was clumsy and kind of the worst.
